No Air Conditioning? Here are 4 Ways to Keep Yourself Cool and Save

Ceiling fans help when living with no air conditioner

If you are living with no air conditioning, the summer months can be a tough time, especially if a heat wave rolls around. But instead of rushing off to the store and buying yourself an air conditioner the first moment you can afford to, consider all the money you can save by going without. Not only are air conditioners expensive, but using them over the entire summer can really add up.

So here are 4 ways that you can adopt to live without using an air conditioner.

Install ceiling fans

Although a ceiling fan cannot lower the temperature of a room, the airflow will help you feel cooler. Whether it’s in your bedroom or the living room, a ceiling fan can make a huge difference and running it costs a fraction of air conditioning. Coupled with open windows at night, it can make an even bigger difference.

Close the windows during the day and open them at night

If you are living with no air conditioning, you need to use nature’s daily cycle to your advantage. During the day the air heats up while at night it cools down. So keep your windows closed during the day to keep the hot air out and then open them at night when the temperature drops. Open windows at night can be especially refreshing when you are trying to sleep.

Turn off heat generating appliances when possible

Many appliances give off heat, which can be an unwelcome contribution during a summertime heat wave. So try to use them less during the hot summer months. Instead of using your dryer, hang your clothes on a clothesline. Or try cooking outside on a BBQ instead of using your oven.

Install blinds and close strategically

The sun’s natural light can also heat up your residence. If you have some big windows that get a lot of sun, having some white blinds to block out the light can really help.
